Tokyo Century Donated Retinal Scanning Laser Eyewear to Schools for the Blind in Japan

  • Social

Tokyo Century has donated retinal scanning laser eyewear "RETISSA® Display II” developed by QD Laser, Inc. (“QD Laser”) to schools for the blind and visually impaired across the country through the National Association of Principals of Schools for the Blind (Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo).

RETISSA ® Display II is a head-mounted display that employs a retinal scanning technology, "VISIRIUM ® Technology" * to directly projects digitized information onto the wearer's retina through an ultra-compact optical system built inside the eyewear. This system projects light onto the retina to form a clear image almost regardless of the focus position or the condition of the user's cornea or lens so that they are able to view images from a camera, personal computer, tablet terminal and smartphone without using glasses, contact lenses or other vision aid tools.

The use of RETISSA ® Display II at schools for the blind and the visually impaired is expected to expand the possibilities for students to operate computers and other information and communications technology equipment, and to help students find work by improving their computer skills.

QD Laser was launched in 2006 as a spin-off venture of Fujitsu Ltd.. The company develops and supplies its original, highly efficient semiconductor lasers and optical information devices.

As one of its core businesses, in the visual support business, QD Laser received grants from the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and developed retinal imaging laser eyewear, and that has led to establish the RETISSA series.

Tokyo Century first invested in QD Laser in 2008, and is currently the second largest shareholder. In addition to QD Laser’s corporate belief, “Never give up the chance to see”, Tokyo Century has empathized with the feelings of improving the quality of life of visually impaired students that came from teachers of schools of the blind and special needs education schools for the visually impaired. To support the thoughts, Tokyo Century donated 20 sets of RETISSA® Display II to schools of the blind and special needs education schools for the visually impaired, including Tokyo Metropolitan Bunkyo School for the Blind.

We hope that, through the donation, RETISSA® Display II will help those pupils and students to empower their learning and open up amazing new possibilities for their future.
